Scenes 30 and 31: In which a certain Maia shows up, a certain Noldo leaves, and there is a Heartwarming Moment between Finarfin and Finrod.
~~~~~
Scene 30: The Gates of Tirion
[Silent shot of the western Walls of Tirion from the outside. After a moment a trumpet sounds, and the gates open slowly. From the city an ordered host of Noldor march forth. The front line consists of Fëanor and his seven sons. They begin to march westwards through the Calacirya, but stop as there is a clattering of hooves and Eonwë rides rapidly around the side of Tirion and to the front of the horse. Fëanor draws his sword and steps forward]
Fëanor: Who are you, and why do you hinder us?
Eonwë: Peace, son of Finwë. I am Eonwë, herald of Manwë, and I come not to hinder you, but to deliver his message.
Fëanor: Very well, then. Speak quickly.
Eonwë: Manwë Súlimo, High King of Arda, bids me say this: Against the folly of Fëanor shall be set my counsel only. Go not forth! For the hour is evil, and your road leads to sorrow that ye do not foresee. No aid will the Valar lend you in this quest, but neither will they hinder you; for this ye shall know: as ye came hither freely, freely shall ye depart. But thou, Fëanor Finwë's son, by thine oath are exiled. The lies of Melkor thou shalt unlearn in bitterness. Vala he is, thou saist. Then thou hast sworn in vain, for none of the Valar canst thou overcome now or ever within the halls of Eä, not though Eru who thou namest had made thee thrice greater than thou art.
[He finishes, and looks around at the company, obviously expecting them all to turn around and go home. Fëanor laughs at him, and turns to the host]
Fëanor: So! The High King has spoken. Will you heed him? Will this valiant people send forth the heir of their own King into banishment alone, with his sons only, and return to their bondage? Aye, maybe so. But if any will come with me, I say to them, what is sorrow? Sorrow we have seen here, in blessed Aman. Here in Valinor we have come through bliss to woe. Now I aim to try the other – through sorrow to find joy, or if not joy, freedom!
[The Noldor cheer, and Fëanor smiles grimly and turns back to Eonwë]
Fëanor: Say this to Manwë Súlimo, High King of Arda: If Fëanor cannot overthrow Morgoth, at least he delays not to assail him, and sits not idle in grief. And it may be that Eru has set in me a fire greater than you know. Such hurt will I do to the Foe of the World that even the mighty in the Ring of Doom shall wonder to hear it. In the end, they too shall follow me. Now farewell!
[Eonwë stares at him for a moment, and then nods]
Eonwë: I will convey your words to the King. Fare thee well, Fëanor.
[Eonwë wheels his horse and rides off back west. Fëanor returns to his host, and they resume marching. Fly over the ranks, in through the gate of Tirion, and up the empty streets to the square below the Mindon]
Scene 31: The Square Below The Mindon Eldaliéva
[The square is still crowded. Fingon runs up the road from the gate]
Fingon: [Shouting] Fëanor has departed! Come, let us follow!
[On the steps of the Mindon, Finarfin looks at Fingolfin]
Finarfin: [Softly] Brother… you can still hold them back.
[Fingolfin shakes his head]
Fingolfin: No. [He raises his voice] People of the Noldor, the time is at hand. Let us depart this fair city for the lands over the sea.
[Cheers from the crowd. Fingon calls out]
Fingon: We must move swiftly if we are to catch Fëanor!
He runs off down the road again, and some part of the Noldor host follows him. Galadriel runs down the steps of the Mindon and joins them. The rest of the form up in a more orderly fashion, save for one group, led by Noldo #1. Fingolfin sees them, and walks over to them]
Fingolfin: It is time to depart, friends. Come, join the host.
[Noldo #1 shakes his head]
Noldo #1: We have decided not to depart this city, King Fingolfin.
Fingolfin: You fear the dangers of the road?
Noldo #1: No! We stay for the love of the Valar, of Aulë our benefactor.
Fingolfin: [Not condemning] And for the love of the works of your hands, no doubt.
[Noldo #1 hesitates, and then nods briefly]
Fingolfin: Stay, then, and be well. If I meet death in the lands over the sea, I will join you here again when Námo releases me from his halls.
Noldo #1: You will ever be welcome here, my king. [He pauses] I beg you, do not go on this foolhardy quest.
Fingolfin: I have no choice. My people will go, and I must lead them. [He shakes his head] May your lives be full of joy.
[Fingolfin turns and walks over to the road to the gate, around which the rest of the host is gathered]
Fingolfin: Follow, my people, for Fëanor and Fingon draw ever further ahead.
[Fingolfin sets off down the road, the Noldor following. Finarfin and Finrod are left standing in the square, and Finarfin's House are the last in the host, glancing back frequently]
Finarfin: Now it comes to it, I do not wish to go.
Finrod: Nor I, father. But our people have gone, our family has gone… we must follow.
[Finarfin nods, and then pauses]
Finarfin: Has Amarië…?
[Finrod shakes his head]
Finrod: She will stay with her people.
Finarfin: As Eärwen will with hers.
Finrod: Mother is not coming?
[Finarfin shakes his head]
Finarfin: She has returned to Alqualondë. So we must both leave our beloveds.
[Finrod nods sadly]
Finrod: You a Teler, I a Vanya… do you not sometimes wish that your true love could have been a Noldo, and would come with us?
Finarfin: No, Finrod, I do not. Eärwen I chose, and I have never regretted that.
Finrod: Then you are a stronger elf than I.
Finarfin: I am also married. Do not worry yourself, Finrod – it may be that you will find a love amongst the Noldor when we reach Middle-earth.
Finrod: I will love none but Amarië as long as I live.
Finarfin: Then you are worthy of her. I hope that, someday, you will meet her again.
Finrod: And perhaps I will. [He looks around, and sees that the host has almost vanished out of the gate] Father, come. We must follow if we are not to be left behind.
[Finarfin nods, and looks back at the Mindon Eldaliéva, and by extension all of Tirion]
Finarfin: Farewell, fair Tirion upon Túna. Would that I had departed under better circumstances.
[He turns, walks over to Finrod, now waiting at the top of the road, and together the two walk down towards the gate, out of which the last of the host is now walking]
~~~~~~
And now I wait for BiD to get back to me about Alqualonde.
