The title is a second fade in thingy, methinks.

I'll attempt to arrange the title(s) (and fade them in) over whatever everyone thinks best (if you want me to try it). I'm just playing around with ideas at the minute - basically seeing if I can find anything that looks cool (and struggling with a few programmes ) Not sure how successful I'll be in the long run (this is all still very new to me) - I just though I'd put a few ideas forward and see what people thought of the concept. Someone else may be able to make this idea look a lot better than I can - or come up with something completely different and truly amazing. Just adding my ideas to the mixing pot I guess... thanks for checking them out oh yeah - the (attempt at an) orc-like face in the above picture probably comes across a bit too simian-like which gets me thinking... what 'look' would you be going for for the orcs?

My personal imaginings: less disgusting, but more cruel and frightening, than in the LOTR films, with long, narrow, cunning faces; like exaggerated, twisted, Elves, with sallow skin, bow-legs, long arms and all that deal.
Oh yes, and I forgot-when fighting, heavily armoured in iron, with helms that conceal the face, and gauntlets. This is necessary for disguising Finrod and co. in Lay of Luthien.

I'd think the orcs actually come in two kinds. There's the Orcs, which are Maeglin's twisted elves, and then the smaller Goblins. These would be the orcs which were created by Melkor from tortured animals - pretty much non-sentient drones under the control of the nearest Ainu. Effectively, they would be the ones who, after a Balrog or Dragon is killed, run away screaming rather than fighting on less effectively.
Yes, Tolkien debated over the origin of orcs. I'd say that Melkor would probably have done everything he could.
Any chance of getting an artist to work up a picture of the twisted elf variety? The goblins would probably be pretty similar to the ones from the LotR films, I'm thinking...

Hello again (I hope you are all well), Yep, I know the exact origin of the orcs is a thing that's been pondered over time and time again (and Tolkien himself never made it 100% clear), and I've seen some of the discussions where animals/beasts are also thought to have played a part in some of the orc's creation - but I'm not 100% convinced of this concept myself (though it is a possibility - and I'm probably completely wrong on this matter ). But regardless of that - it would be good to show a few different 'strains' of orcs (even though there is not much said about the different subspecies in the Silmarillion), as I presume different orcs types would be bred for different tasks (like in the LOTR books) from the start (though from what stock - I guess we'll never truly know ). Anyway, I have just tried doing a (very) quick sketch of an (corrupted elf) orc (minus the helmet for now)... though I think it still looks a bit too ape-like for my own liking... but I'll show it to you guys anyway (just to add some more content). img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/958086/orc01.jpgLike I said, it's just something thrown together quickly (as you can probably tell ), just to get the ball rolling. And on a side note - do you think it might be worth starting separate thread for the concept artwork for monsters & creatures (either one thread to contain all of the different types of creatures, or one thread per monster type) ?

Start a new thread for Orc art, by all means. Still a bit apey for me, but nevermind. I can't talk till I produce something myself, and that'll happen on the day Orcs repent...

Guess what! I finally found a scanner, and installed it! WHOO HOO! One more reason why i'm not being a procrastinator anymore! Anyways, I could spend over two hours going through all of my pieces, but I found this one first and decided to show it. Look at the pretties please! I don't know what it reminds me of, I think I was really 'out' (a.k.a. Ill and refusing to stop working) when I sketched this. I then touched it up, or added some features on Adobe Photoshop. You tell me what it reminds you of... ~Ka

I wasn't sure where exactly to post this, but I'll just stick it here to start. This is a drawing of Luthien that I did...hmmm *checks date on picture* Oh, three years ago. To this day, I have no idea how I managed to make her look so...perfect. I've drawn a lot since then, and I have never been able to replicate it.

These are just samples and not something I really worked hard at. The first is a sketch of Gandalf that I did on notebook paper, doodling at my job. The second and third are manipulated photos of actors to get ideas about how the elf characters may look. It was my plan to use them as pseudo models for later drawings.

Whoa...cool. I like the second manip a lot--very Elvish. You doodle when you're bored too? I've got tons of doodles in my physics notebook...that class was soooooo boring.
