As it's probably the most important music in the whole thing, I thought we should come up with some ideas for the Music of the Ainur. Choral ideas, different instruments for different Vala, that sort of thing. What do you all think? ~ Chronicler ~

Umm...I think there should be uilleann pipes in it. Just because they're so pretty sounding. Also flute, tin whistle, hammered dulcimer, harp...
Eh. Synnie me maybe could come up with something interesting for visuals here...but nobody else would get it.

maybe start out with uilleann pipes, like Elennar suggested, and then add in some flutes, clarinets, gradually getting deeper. You know what I mean? please? then, once we've got all our instruments, we can add in some choral bits...that's a sketch of what I always imagined it as. maybe as each instrument starts playing, have each Vala step forward, or have smome massive choreographic masterpiece...although the folks in animation may not like that idea so much...

And the folks in Script may not like trying to work their prologue around a massively long Ainulindale. But that's because we Scriptwriters are a picky lot, and there's nothing to /write/ for a musical scene. If it makes a good film, though, I'll still complain - what else am I for? - but I'll go with it, and make appropriate awed noises when watching it.
(Side note, it's good to see that /someone/ is still participating here...)

...hmmm, forgot about that bit. Besides, I tried writing something like that after I posted it, and it didn't turn out the way I'd imagined it. It sounded nice, but it wasn't Ainulindale.
(Re: side note, I just decided out of the blue that maybe I should see what was going on over here at Silm Film. The answer (at least in the parts I'm working on) was not much.)

Yeah, it's annoying when that happens.
(Not much anywhere, because very few of the people who 'joined' actually show up)

I haven't disappeared forever...really. Just wasn't thinking about this...got bored and remembered I have another forum I really should check up on.
On the subject of music--I got my pipes! Now I must learn to play them...and see what sort of tune I can come up with. Maybe start out with just the drones, then add either the chanter or some other instrument, as sounds best.

what about gregorian type chanting that starts out soft and grows as more voices/styles of singing and then instruments add to it with the effects circling around the audience? that way it will seem more like they are in the midst as a third person spectator than as just an audience.

I like the chant idea but I don't think that it would be appropriate. I don't recall the Ainur actually "singing" in the music. I think it is all an instrumental sound going on. I'll check to be sure. Now, if we decide to deviate to make it more compelling to the audience, we could do some chanting, but what would the Tolkien "purist" say? That's how film makers get into hot water because they are thinking "compelling movie" and the fan-boy is thinking "true to the source material". Again, I'll do some checking.

One interesting question is whether the Ainur restricted their music to the western 12-tone system and the 8-tone minor and major scales.
