If Chris Tolkien, called from the estate, and told you that it was a go for a live action Silmarillion movie and that you had been chosen to be the casting director for the film...what would your choices be for the major roles?
Hmmm....Johnny Depp as Eol or as a son of Feanor...hmm.

Okay Bob, I'll take Will Ferrell as Aule and maybe Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Melkor. Go ahead and through in Christian Bale and Daniel Day Lewis as, as,....noldor.

Sad about Heath. I would liked to have seen him my 300 million dollar live action Silmarillion.

" While I am acknowledging the saddness of losing such a fine actor, may I say, "G" you are too funny. 300 million dollar live action Silmarillion? lol Why not go for the gusto and make a billion dollar movie? Surely we could borrow the money once we got the Tolkien estate on board. ha, ha

^ Yeah, now that I think about it, maybe 100 million for each script and there would be probably five movies...so...500 million and change. ;D Hmm...I take that back. It would need to be 600 million because the acting talent would take up 100 million alone.

......acting talent would take up 100 million alone. Now, I know you must be joking! The first film is going to require a huge cast. The rest of the films might not be so bad because people will be dying off as we go along. I think, if we really could do a real movie for the masses, with the blessing of Chris, the acting talent alone would pull in two or three million dollars, at least in the initial stages. Then you have all the production costs- the high and mighty writers, artists, directors, assistant directors- then you have costumes and the costume designors, make-up artists, props, location costs and then you have all the lowly, but much needed stage hands, lighting and sound artists, backstage workers, admistrative assistants, clean-up crews- everybody wants their cut and more than half have their attorneys who are fighting for their clients share which will be inflated because they want their share of the their share. Yeah, a big budget movie like the Silm could easily hit a billion dollars.

I would love to see Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Dior Eluchil! I think that the description of Dior as being "very beautiful" due to the blood of three races mingling within him fits Jon perfectly.
Nicole Kidman as Melian, Eva Green as Luthien, Scarlet Johansen as Elwing, Daniel Craig as Tuor, Paul Bettany as Fingon, Ewan Macgregor as Meadhros
That's what I have so far, more to come later when I can think more on the topic

Man, I forgot about Mr. Bettany. I don't know if I would have him as Fingon but he would not be a bad choice.
I like Ewan Macgregor but he is too short to be Maedhros and don't think the hair color would look good on him.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers would be cool in that role though "I" would not call him "beautiful".
Kidman would be casted but I would choose someone else for Melian but I could squint and see Eva as Luthien.

See I think that Jon Rhys Meyers is beautiful in an idealized, classical sculpture kind of way and that is what I always envisioned for Dior.
As for Melian, Eva Green was the one I could think of right away. Though I still see Nicole Kidman as Melian... until I can come up with a better role for her and someone else for Melian. I could see Nicole Kidman portraying power, strength, wisdom and beauty very well.

Hey,
How about
Melian - Angelina Jolie Luthien - Megan Fox Thingol - Daniel-Day Lewis
With the proper make-up and hair coloring; they seem like kin to me.

Sure wish that Jeff Buckley were still alive and kicking. Not that I would cast him directly into a role (although he was elvish enough for me) but when I think about male elf singing...I think about him. What a wonderful voice he had.

I feel kinda strange suggesting this, but I think Ralph Lister might be good in a Silm live-action movie...not sure what role, but he has an amazing speaking voice--lovely accent and annunciation. He's currently involved with an independent fantasy film project called Ancanar. Look it up on youtube and you'll find quite a few videos about it; it looks pretty cool.
Anyway, for me, I think Megan Fox is a little too voluptuous. I could totally see Eva Green as Luthien. I think she's got just the right amount of beauty so that it's not overpowering.
I do agree with lennaire, though. Daniel Craig would make a nice Tuor. I was thinking Hayden Christensen for Turin--he's certainly got the looks for it--but, on the other hand, I don't think he could pull off a believable accent.
Jeremy Irons would do well as an older Hurin, I think--or maybe one of the Elf kings.

Ditto that on Jeremy Irons. He'd have to be in it. Dunno about Dwayne "The Rock" as Melkor; I see him as more of a heroic type, to be honest.
And Johnny Depp. Yes. Just...yes.

Hmm...I could see "The Rock" as Beorn for The Hobbit. Not sure about Melkor, though...
