Scene: 52 - Crowning of Fingolfin
DISSOLVE:
EXT: A narrow meadow between two wooded areas
CLOSE UP: Bright yellow flowers
ZOOM OUT: to Galadriel and Aredhel walking together
CUT TO:
TWO SHOT: Galadriel and Aredhel walk in the meadow
Aredhel: (to Galadriel)
The golden light is bright in the sky and the dark vapors have lessened this season; yet you seem troubled Galadriel.
Galadriel: (to Aredhel)
He has called for a meeting of Finwë's entire house, and I cannot foretell what portent that this might be.
Aredhel: (to Galadriel)
Yes, I have heard the news also. Do you think that ill will inherently surrounds such a gathering?
Galadriel: (to Aredhel)
Not necessarily, but I do still have some fear that the fragile peace that we have known for a short while may be in jeopardy.
Aredhel: (to Galadriel)
Perhaps it will be good for strife to come to a head now, then it can finally be resolved one way or another; I say the sooner the better so we can move forward as a people. Those loyal to Fëanor's sons are much smaller in number. We should not fear that they will have much sway.
Galadriel: (to Aredhel)
It does not take an army to bring down a people Aredhel; Morgoth has proven that while he abided in Aman. Mind your words and your heart. Roads to contention must not be so readily embraced.
CUT TO:
MED. SHOT: Orodreth walks up fast and greets them
Orodreth: (to both)
Galadriel, Aredhel, I was wondering where you two were. Come now, for it is time.
CUT TO:
EXT: Large camp with many colorful tents near Lake Mithrim
LONG SHOT: Elves walk about well dressed.
DISSOLVE:
INT: inside a large tent
MED. SHOT: Maglor, Amrod, Amras and Curufin
Amrod: (to Maglor, stringing a bow)
He has not said much lately, at least not to me. Are you sure that he is alright Maglor?
Maglor: (to Amrod, plucking his harp)
Maedhros is still recovering. He has been more serious and silent since his return, but I cannot fault him for it.
MED. SHOT CONT'D: Celegrom and Celegrom walk in.
Amras: (to all, feathering arrows)
Well it has been days since I heard him speak at all, so I was surprised to find out about this meeting.
Caranthir: (to all)
I say that it is about time. He needs to assert himself and speak out as leader of all the Noldor here in Middle-earth.
Curufin: (to all, polishing a sword)
He may be of few words lately, but his actions reveal much. His command that I forge a powerful new sword for him tells me that we will not be idle for long.
Amrod: (to all)
Yes, I have seen him practice with it. He may be fiercer now with one hand than he was with two.
Celegrom: (to all)
That is good news. Once Maedhros unites the Noldor under the House of Fëanor, we will route the enemy and take back the Silmarils.
CUT TO:
INT: Large open area in the camp with seating and decorated
MED. SHOT: Fingolfin and his children and Finarfin's children are seated. Servants tend to them. Fëanor's sons stride in and remain standing except for Maglor who sits. Maedhros comes in last and goes to where all can see him.
Fingolfin: (to Maedhros, standing up, stern look)
Since you have summoned us to this...meeting, I gather that you are doing better Maedhros...at least I pray you are.
Maedhros: (to Fingolfin, grim but smiling)
Thank you Fingolfin, I improve with each passing day. (pause) I sense that there is some apprehension among our kin concerning this meeting. There is no need to worry.
Galadriel: (to Maedhros, concerned)
Then what is your intention cousin Maedhros?
Maedhros: (to Galadriel, coolly)
My intention, cousin Galadriel; is to do what I must to make the Noldor in Middle-earth united and strong.
CUT TO:
CLOSE UP: Turgon stands up quickly and is upset
Turgon: (to Maedhros, standing, grim)
And how do you plan to achieve that? The past cries and laments at what the House of Fëanor considers unity!
CUT TO:
MED. SHOT: Low clamor of voices is heard. Fingon rises and puts his hand on Turgon's shoulder suggesting that he should sit, which he finally does.
Maedhros: (to Turgon, to all)
Many regret the deeds that were done in haste, and many more would like to reestablish fellowship with those that braved the Helcaraxe, but because of shame of those deeds, they hesitate.
Aegnor: (to Maedhros, very faint)
And rightly so; they all should.
Maedhros: (to all, commanding)
Nevertheless, and despite all the evil that has befallen each one, reconciliation must be achieved even if only frail tolerance is the final product.
Fingon: (to Maedhros, very concerned)
Then is it now your wish to be officially crowned "King of the Noldor"? Are you to follow in the footsteps of Fëanor?
CUT TO:
CLOSE UP: Maedhros is silent as he looks around about him.
CUT TO:
MED. SHOT: Maedhros's P.O.V.: PAN ACROSS: the concerned silent Noldor seated around him and his standing brothers
CUT TO:
MED. SHOT: Maedhros makes a gesture to elves off screen
Maedhros: (to all)
There must be clear leadership from someone who is strong, yet fair and compassionate.
MED. SHOT CONT'D: Three elves come toward Maedhros. Two elves flank one who carries a crown on an ornate pillow.
Maedhros: (to all, loud and commanding)
Behold the crown of Finwë!
MED. SHOT CONT'D: All look concerned except Fëanor's sons.
ANGLE ON: Crown on pillow
BACK TO SCENE:
CUT TO:
CLOSE UP: Maedhros
Maedhros: (to all, loud and commanding)
Crown ordained by King Ingwë of the Vanyar elves in Aman with Manwë Sulimo's blessing. It was taken up by Fëanor, Finwë's oldest son, after his tragic death, and from Fëanor, into my keeping for a brief while. (pause) Hear me all Noldor from the Blessed Land. I, Maedhros, son of Fëanor, now past this crown to Fingolfin the son of Finwë!
CUT TO:
MED. SHOT: All of Maedhros's brothers are shocked except for Maglor. Caranthir and Celegrom move towards the front table with fell looks but are stopped by a stern looking Maglor. Curufin plops down in a chair very disappointed.
Maglor: (to Caranthir, Celegrom, stern but calm)
Will you not take a seat like Curufin? Sample the food and drink, it is quite good.
Caranthir: (to Maglor, upset)
This is madness!
Maglor: (to Caranthir, smiles)
Sit please.
MED. SHOT CONT'D: Caranthir and Celegrom sober up from their anger when they look and see Maedhros staring at them with the fierceness of Fëanor in his eyes. They sit as Maedhros takes the crown from the delivery elves.
Fingolfin: (to Maedhros, surprised)
Maedhros, I do not understand...
Maedhros: (to Fingolfin)
Come now uncle, you need not be too surprised and humbled. You are the eldest of Finwë, whether here or back in Aman. The kingship should naturally go to you who also did rule in Tirion for a while in Finwë's stead.
CUT TO:
TWO SHOT: Maedhros holds the crown up for all to see. He nods to Fingolfin who bows. Maedhros places the crown on Fingolfin's head.
Maedhros: (to all, loud)
Behold the King of the Noldor in Middle-earth; King Fingolfin!
CUT TO:
MED. SHOT: Eruption of applause and cheers, music starts playing and heralds are sent out announcing the news. Amrod and Amras finally sit down next to each other.
Amrod: (to Amras)
Well, that was...surprising; a most surprising day.
Amras: (to Amras)
Yes, yes it surly has been. I wonder what unexpected thing is to befall us next.
MED SHOT CONT'T: Two elf maidens stroll by and smile at the twins. The twins look at each other with raised eyebrows and then smile back at the maidens. They catch up with them and they pair up and start to dance to the music.
CUT TO:
MED. SHOT: Celegrom, Caranthir and Curufin sit with upset looks. Curufin final eyes a large goblet with many jewels on it and starts to tinker with it.
CUT TO:
MED. SHOT: Fingolfin hugs Maedhros and then Fingon and Turgon. Maedhros and Fingon toast and drink together. All are dancing and Maglor is playing.
