Huinesoron, no! That would be so bathetic!
(A massive army of Balrogs and Orcs storm Gondolin's gate.)
TUOR: I say, Turgon old chap, I've been wondering for a long time...are those wings of shadow and flame metaphorical, or do they possess an actual use?
Keep the wings as large, scary, dark things that kill...

Huh. Fun piccies. ^^ I'm actually going with the "wings" group. It seems to look better, even if the things don't really work. Besides, if they don't have wings, how in the Multiverse do the ones at the PPC keep flying around? ~ Chronicler ~

Blast. Love the little picture of Gandalf they give you instead. Blarg, linking and stuff is too complicated. Just look around CoucilofElrond, gallery, Alexander is the artist.

NEVER! My dad (Glorfindel) killed a Balrog by knocking it down a big hole; I would think that would have turned out differently if it had had wings. Anyway: I like the idea of just shadowy wings, but more obviously shadowy than in PJ's version. Or perhaps, we could do something like Constantine, just flash the wings in one shot, then they're not there. Meep, I can't quite describe it, go watch it (NOTE: It is rated R for language and frightening images, and I had a hard time getting to sleep after watching it.) SURE... I love horror movies, don't worry I won't have bad dreams, I dream like that all the time. Some might say i'm plagued by a troublesome imagination, but I enjoy it. It helps with me' art... Good point though, if we were going to take that approach, we would need to put attention towards the balrogs 'gathering' energy to form wings of any sort. If you want to take a 'flash' approach with light, or more of an aura-like step it's fine with me. Just as long as it doesn't look like someone jumped upon a balrog's back and yelled for a minute or two to glue them on... ~Ka

Well, how about the Balrog starts off as a ten-foot high black humanoid, and then, I dunno, raises its arms or crouches down or something and gathers energy to suddenly burst into flame and grow a semi-solid shadow (like Ungoliant's web) that takes the form of a much larger creature with the wings, shot through with flame. Then they could be a lot more imposing, without actually being unreasonably sized, and would still be not that hard to kill when tired, because they'd just be down to the demon at the centre again.

Good pointers... That sounds like the best solution at this moment.
I guess the next step is, how much fire do we want when the balrog gathers it and what level do we want to be our 'control'... Do we want a steady rise or a more flicker to the maximum?

Give them beanie wings. *g* Okay maybe not, however My suggestion to give them a bit larger than life appearance would be to have a shadow that darkens everything about them for a distance... As really it's unlikely for even the ones like Durin's Bane to have wings (why... I could point to bickering Lore people on other sites but I'd rather not) I'd rather their shadow be darker, sort of like the criy of the nazgul only you can physically see the darkening.

Can someone draw me a Balrog 1) with wings 2) the same one without wings?
Doesn't have to be perfect, just a rough drawing for a trailer.

Now your order is 5 Balrog with wings and a 10 piece Balrog without. Is that spicy or mild? Would you like to supersize your order? I hope to have some up soon...now where is my hot sauce?

Is derleu still around? Should we post something on his website to see if we can lure him back? Your call G.

Sure thing. If we can get him back that would be great and it would take some of the burden off of my mine.
