Hmm...interesting. I'm liking Rufus Sewell as Melkor...yeah. I'll have to give this a shot for some of the Valie.

The hardest thing is to decide how much they will look like the Children of Iluvatar but "otherly" at the same time. In general they look like highly "glorified" elf lords and ladies but they have something beyond that. Example is Yavanna with the ability to "look" tree-ish. How much is that going to be stylized into their everyday look?

Nice to come back to a board that is buzzing with activity...well...it would have been nice. Anyhow, I have another drawing of Melkor that I'll put up sometime this week.

I will be posting concept boards for each of the Valar this week. What do I mean by concept board? I'm glad you asked! I have been kidding with my kids for the past three to four weeks about me casting for "my movie". I made a list of actors that would be possible choices for the film and I even have two back up choices for each of the characters...hmm...I'll probably post that list too. Anyway, I believe that I can do a better job drawing the boards if I had a person to pattern the drawings on. So, I made a collage of pictures that I could find of the Valar from the web and included photos of the actors that I would select to play the parts.
Take a look starting tomorrow evening and let me know what you think. I'll probably post a Valar a day starting with Manwe. Stay tune...

I was going to post my choices as a Poll to give everyone a chance to vote, but since the last few "Poll Post" I've done have gotten so little response, I've decided to just post my top choices here. Manwë SúlimoFor Manwe, I looked for someone who could look kingly, stern, but also kind. I also wanted someone who was not "too old" ;D. I chose an age range for the Valar of 40-55. Then I ended up braking the range in two of my three choices. Anyway, my choices for Manwe were/are 1st ChoicePaul Bettany(38) 6’3’’ 2nd ChoiceIoan Gruffudd(36) 5’11’’ 3rd ChoiceRalph Fiennes(48) 6’I must admit that Ralph was my first choice for a while but I could not match him up with my choices of Varda. On top of that, I think he may be a tad over exposed in that dominate type of genre role (just my opinion). I like Ioan's eyes (stare) and I've considered him playing a Noldor at one point. Paul, I like for the "nice but can be mean" demeanor that he has shown in a variety of roles( A Knight's Tale, Wimbledon, Da Vinci Code, Firewall, Inkheart). Plus he matches up pretty well with my choices of Varda and he is sort of "Vanyarian" in his look (which Manwe would probably emulate since they are so devoted to him). Here is the Template Design Board for him. By the way; I did include a couple of pictures of Peter O'Toole. He is my retro pick for Manwe. ;D

Varda, Galadriel, Melian, Luthien are the hardest females to cast...in my opinion. Each has their unique "Beauty" to behold (she was the most beautiful in Middle-earth, she was the most beautiful in Valinor, in Arda, of the Ainur, of those returning across the sea, blah ,blah, blah). So you have to look for really hot chicks ;D who can act (what, no Megan Fox?). Whew, I burned out brain cells trying to find ladies that would fit the bill (of course there are plenty of female actors that can stop the world with their performances and look good to boot but we'll talking about "Varda, Tintalle, Fanuidhol, Elbereth"! Varda ElentáriFortunately, my choice for Manwe helped seal the deal on my choice for Varda. I had already considered her for Melian but she fell right into place once I had Paul as my top choice for High King. 1st ChoiceJennifer Connelly(39) 5’7’’ 2nd ChoiceAngelina Jolie(34) 5’8” 3rd ChoiceDemi Moore(47) 5’5” A real life pairing should translate well to the screen. So, I went with husband and wife for Manwe and Varda. Oh, I didn't include a retro pic for Varda, but my retro choice is Grace Kelly. ;D That's all for today. I'll do two more tomorrow.

I do love Paul Bettany. He gets my vote.

Hmm...Jennifer Connely, eh? That could work. She has the right presence and the right look.

Yeah, I'm surprise that I did not think of Paul earlier in my selection process. He was a guy that popped in my head the last couple of weeks. I was looking for a potential Varda or Melian at the time and I ran across a picture of him and Jennifer Connelly together at an event. Once I saw the pic of them together, it was like "why not Manwe and Varda?" I had considered older actresses for Varda like Michelle Pfeiffer, Rene Russo, Sharon Stone, Kim Basinger and Jane Seymour. But choosing an older Varda meant an older Manwe and I wanted to say away from an old man "Zeus" god like High King. It's hard work casting immortals.
I don't know, maybe Michelle Pfeiffer would be better a choice. I really wanted her to be Varda for a long time but gave her up. Michelle Pfeiffer ten to twelve years ago would have been perfect (my opinion). With CGI and the way Robert Zemeckis did "Beowulf" and "A Christmas Carol", maybe it wouldn't matter because you could age up or down any character by computer.

I will skip Aule and Ulmo for now (still working on the best image/look for them) and go to Orome. I had no problem selecting "a look" for him. Oromë 1st ChoiceDaniel Craig(41) 5’10’’ 2nd ChoiceThomas Kretschmann(41) 6’3rd ChoiceJason Isaacs(46) 5’11’Each one of these guys could pull of a good preformance and have a nice hunter's look. Daniel may be too well known at this time, and too identified with other chararters, but I still like him the most. Although I liked Thomas in some of his work, King Kong, etc.; it wasn't until I saw him in "The Valkyrie" and remembered him in "The Pianist" that I really considered him. Jason I believe would work great too, but the Harry Potter movies may have over exposed him as a genre actor. My retro choice would be Kirk Douglas. In some old photos of Kirk, he and Daniel have a simular hard warrior look...Spartacus! ;D

This will be the last Valar post until sometime next week. I hope to have Ulmo and Aulë sorted out by then. Yavanna1st ChoiceUma Thurman(39) 6’ 2nd ChoiceMilla Jovovich(34) 5’ 8’’ 3rd ChoiceBrooke Shields(45) 6’I didn't have a hard time with this choice either. I thought of and liked the idea of Uma months ago. Milla came to mind later but never seemed to fit as well as Uma. I did consider Emma Thompson when I had a couple of older "Aulës" in mind, but since it seems that I've gravitated to younger Valar, I ended up dropping her from my list and adding Brooke because her stature...height. I'm good with Uma being a Yavanna prototype.
