I realise this has theoretically been decided already (several times over), but I'm expanding the idea. How many films are we going to make, and what are they going to cover?
Having recently acquired delusions of grandeur, I thought, why not try the entire history of Arda, from Ainulindale to Fourth Age? Hence, my list of possible titles/subjects:
The Fall of the Noldor. Being the Silmarillion from the Ainulindalë through to the crowning of Fingolfin as High King in Middle-earth. Title is a literal translation of 'Noldolantë'.
The Lay of Luthien. Being the Lay of Leithian in film form. Title changed to prevent the Iggerant Masses going 'Leithian? Wassat?'
The Tale of Túrin. Being the story of Túrin and his ill-fated family. Title is blindingly obvious.
The Fall of Gondolin. The tale of Gondolin, covering the building, the story of Aredhel, Eöl and Maeglin, the story of Tuor, and everything up to their arrival at the Havens of Sirion. Title may need changing - we have two 'The Fall of' films, so maybe a translation of one of Gondolin's names? The Hidden Rock or The Singing Rock might work, but then, they could be a bit too vague. Opinions welcome.
The War of Wrath. Covering the Ruin of Doriath, the story of the Havens of Sirion, the voyages of Eärendil, and the War of Wrath itself. Possible alternal title, to avoid revealing the ending and having the abbreviation 'WoW', The Voyage of Eärendil.
The Land of the Star. Akallabêth, the Downfall of Númenor. Also covers in brief the entire history of the island. Title designed not to ruin the ending.
The Quest of Erebor. The Hobbit in film form. Title is how Tolkien (and/or Gandalf) referred to the events of that book.
The Return of the Shadow. Fellowship of the Ring in film form, as true to the book as possible. Fortunately, we are not constrained by the necessity to make it accessible to the Iggerant Masses. Title from one of Tolkien's own suggestions for LotR: Volume One.
The Treason of Isengard. The Two Towers, book-edition. Title from Tolkien's suggestion for LotR: Volume Two.
The End of the Third Age. Return of the King, book-edition. Title was Tolkien's own preferred name for Volume Three.
The Arda Hastaina Series. As opposed to a full-length film, this would be the treating of various sections of the Arda mythos in an episodic format. For example, Aldarion and Erendis, the meeting of Aragorn and Arwen, the fall of Eregion - any of these might merit inclusion. Basically the place for all those stories we love but can't put in the main films. The title, incidentally, means 'Arda Marred'.
As can be noted, I've split War of Wrath in two. I just think there's too much material in there to cover it all in one movie, but I can't say for sure.
None of this constitutes a decision, merely my own musings on what we could do with this board if it gets back on its feet. So, how many of these would people be interested in making? And are the titles acceptable, or can you think of better ones? And does the content need shifting around a bit? And, and, yeah.
(I'm just killing time, really)
