Hello All I posted a (very) quick sketch in one of the other threads of an orc head (just to get some ideas out there for starters). I'll repeat the link to that pic here... img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/958086/orc01.jpgSo seeing as how I'm a sucker for the bad guys - I thought I have a go at coming up with some orc concept art for the project. I'm not all that good an artist, but I'll put forward a few sketches (if that's OK with you guys), though hopefully other members will join in the fun, and add their own sketches / ideas / comments / etc... as time goes by. Anyway... the above pic is a bit ape-like in appearance, so I've just attempted another quick scribble - but this time I've tried to make it a bit more obvious that the creature has some elf ancestry... img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/958086/orc02.jpgI'm not very pleased with the new sketch either (I think it's far to happy looking - and nowhere near evil/cruel enough), but I've posted it anyway (just so you know I've not been idle ). Please keep in mind though that these are only quick sketches and basic ideas for now - and I'll be attempting some more (hopefully) over the course of the week Thanks for reading/looking

Hmmm... I'm not liking those eyebrow ridges. I think they're what's making it look ape-like.
The problem we're having is trying to make a link between elves, who are the epitome of good-looking, and orcs, who are the opposite.
How's this for a suggestion. Try drawing an elf, and then not changing the actual structure of the face. No fiddling with the bone structure or anything. I dunno if it'd work, but I think that something like an elf with a sneer, the sallow skin Maeglin mentioned, and perhaps something like cut ears, lips, nostrils or whatever... maybe even so much as filed teeth. I dunno. I'm not the artist. I'm just throwing ideas around. D'you think you could throw together a sketch along those lines? The 'evil' would mostly be concentrated in the expression, I think.
It's just an idea. Feel free to ignore the meddling scriptwriter.

I actually had a bit of spare time at work today, some blank paper, and a biro - so I thought I would have another go Funnily enough I have unwittingly incorporated some of the things you have mentioned (the most notable being - toning down the whole 'eyebrow ridge' thing) I have also spent a bit more time on this sketch (though it's still a bit rough, and a biro is not the best thing to work with), and I haven't bothered to quickly colour/shade this one (unlike the others)... but enough excuses - here's the scribble... I think it's looking a little less ape-like, though possibly a bit like some kind of vampire spawn now. Oh well, it's another idea nonetheless ...and your ideas and suggestions are most welcome. Keep them coming

Hador, that second one is MUCH better! (Sorry to be the critic...) For Orcs, I was thinking some where around a grayish-blue or a champagne yellow.
Any suggestions on colour?

From memory, I think orc skin has been described as 'sallow' (which to me implies pale, sickly, jaundiced) but also (in contradiction) as swarthy or dark. We could (I suppose) go the route of the LOTR movies and have various colours & shades, though I think my own preference would be having a similar skin tone for all of the orcs (though of course the majority vote will have the final say). Anyway, here's a quick colour version of the above pic (with a greenish/greyish shade to it)... If anyone want's me to try different colours just let me know (as tinting the above pic to a different colour is fairly straight forward), or if you have the tools - feel free to tinker with it yourself

Just right, Hador, though it would be interesting to try it paler. Still, that just about hits the nail on the head in my view.

Good job on colour, maybe we could have some variations, but not so much that they parade around like those animals from Dr. Suess with the stars on their bellies ... Speaking of which, that book reminds me of how the orcs in LOTR behaved... Interesting. Anyways, Great job.

Most of the old stuff cannot be seen any more, so I'm commandeering the Orc development for now. If there are any who like to participate, fine. Please post sketches and drawings here to be looked at. I will have mine up next week. Orc work is easy compared to doing the beyond fair Vanyar or even the Valar for Eru's sake!
